When Selecting a bit ther are only 3 main factors to consider:
1. Rock Formations
Classified by their different Structures and Chemistry.
2. Rock Hardness
Measured using the Mohs scale of mineral hardness.
General rule of thumb the harder the rock the smaller the diamonds used in the matrix.
3. Matrix
Matrices have wear properties. It is a balance between the wear of the matrix material and diamond exposure. This balance allows for an optimal rate of penetration and bit life.
IN-1 White: Very hard matrix, good-quality diamond grit, high concentration, and lower penetration rates obtainable
IN-5 Purple: Hard soft tough fairly free cutting, good-quality diamond grit, low concentration, and reasonable penetration rates obtainable
IN-7 Green: Tough, reasonably free cutting, good-quality diamond grit, medium to high concentration with good penetration rates.
IN-8 Red & IN-9 Orange: Tough, free cutting, good-quality diamond grit, high concentration, and very god penetration rates
IN-11 Silver, IN-11F Gold & IN-CH Yellow: Very tough,free cutting, high quality diamond grit, high concentration with great penetration rates
IN-10 Black, IN-12 Light Blue & IN-14 Navy Blue: Matrix of high quality pelletized diamond grit, high concentration, and high penetration rates obtainable.
